In this globalized world education has become a prime concern and a basic necessity of life. One who does not know to read and write is ignorant to the world and is in darkness. We may not remember all that we studied in our schools and colleges, still we are educated. Education means what remains after sifting. It is a process of integration and assimilation. Our education system is badly in need of these processes. Then, what is education?

There are two types of knowledge. The first one is informational, derived from study of texts or hearing of teachings, while this is useful, perhaps even indispensable, it must be brought to fruition with the second type of knowledge or wisdom. Wisdom is typically derived from creativity, reflecting, perceiving the reality and applying it.It is a sad story that the education is becoming a commercial activity and not a task of imparting knowledge. The class rooms of our schools and colleges are becoming the commercial complexes day by day. I am afraid, whether this educational system, that our students are going through today, is suppressing the creativity and lacking personal reflection and application?

Our students go to study. Teachers load them with information: text books, reference books, Xerox material, internet downloads etc. Some students even make their way to the tutorials and tuition classes. There again they are fed with information. Thus, there is hardly any time is left to reflect, analyze, contextualize and apply what is being taught; in his/her own way. And so we have students with 95% marks but without the capacity to themselves to the context. They have no answer to the current issues – it may be science, commerce, politics, economics etc. They lack creativity. What is happening to our education system?.What is the quality of education and students we send out at the end of every academic year?

I think we are still undereducated because we lack creativity in our education system. The knowledge is essential, but it should not suppress student’s ability to think creatively. Careful attention must be given to the development of the imaginative, the affective and creative dimensions of each student in all the courses of study. These dimensions enrich learning and prevent us being merely intellectuals.

Given the present day context, our students burn their midnight oil just to get a degree with good marks and a job. I think that’s not everything about education. Our schools and colleges must introduce the ‘creative’ and ‘reflective’ aspects of education. To read between the lines keeping in mind the reality, to see beyond the information of books. What we learn in our schools and colleges is only an introduction; the real lessons begin afterward. Let knowledge may not suppress the hidden talents and capacities of our students rather enable to be creative thinkers.

5 Secret Benefits of Higher Education

We all know that pursing higher education can help educate you on the specific skills you’ll need for your chosen profession. But higher education can also help you in many unexpected ways. Studying in a higher education environment helps students prepare for the real world in a variety of ways.

Here are 5 hidden ways that higher education can help train you for the professional world.1. Organization Skills
Juggling classes, exams, studying, outside activities, family and a job is a lot of work. In order to keep everything from falling through the cracks, students need to develop time management skills. You will also need to become familiar with deadlines and the consequences that come if you don’t meet those deadlines.

2. Expanding Your Network
While pursuing higher education, you are bound to run into some very smart, very successful people. Whether they are successful now or will be in the future, it is a good idea to create a bond with these people and bring them into your network. Later, these will be the people who mentor you, coach you, and help you find success.

3. Experiencing Life Out of Your Comfort Zone
Higher education can be the perfect opportunity for you to experience things you would never get the chance to otherwise. If you are shy, take a chance and speak out in class. Take a course that you are interested in that has nothing to do with your major. Join a group or club that you’ve always been interested in. You’ve got an opportunity to explore outside the box, and you should take it.

4. Leadership Skills
The leadership skills you will use tomorrow can be learned in the classroom today. Take charge when group projects are presented in class. Join an on-campus group and work your way up, or start a group of your own that doesn’t exist yet. Take this opportunity to expand your leadership abilities, so you can apply it to your job later.

5. Team-Building Skills
In a lot of ways, the classroom very much resembles an office. You work with the same people day in and day out. You are all striving to be the best, but things can be easier and more efficient when you work as a team. The classroom can show you how to work with your colleagues and foster a team environment so that everyone gets a chance to succeed.

Learning English as a second language is one of the best things you can do. Here are the answers to the why, how and where questions that many people ask about learning English as a second language.

Why should I learn English?
English is a worldwide language and even a basic level of fluency in this language will get you through all sorts of situations in most countries around the world. It is also an important language in the business world. If you plan to move outside of your own town or city for work, learning English as a second language will give you a much better chance of success. It will mean that you can read books, magazines and newspapers that written in the language, you can speak confidently with people who speak the language and you will open up a world of possibilities for yourself. How can I learn English?
There are many ways to learn a new language. You can learn at home by studying DVDs and audio recordings. You can also attend classes near your home during the day time or in the evenings. You can even work with a private tutor at their home or your home. However, the very best way to learn a new language is to learn in a country where you will be surrounded by native speakers of the language. Learning the English language in a country where English is the first language is the quickest and most effective way to learn. When you are living and learning in an English speaking country you will be learning during every waking hour. You will even be learning when you don’t realise you are. Every time you go into a shop, you will speak English. Most of the people you meet will speak English. Immersing yourself in the English language by learning in an environment where English is spoken all the time certainly makes the job of learning the language much easier and more enjoyable.

Where can I learn English?
It is possible to learn English in any country where English is spoken as a first language. English language learning schools are in many English speaking cities around the world – including the USA, Britain, Australia and New Zealand – so it’s really up to you. Learning English in a large country like the United States is very different to learning in a small country such as New Zealand. Your choice will depend on whether you prefer to live in a large city or a smaller city and what kinds of leisure activities are available. You may also make your decision on aspects such as course cost, distance from home, facilities, accommodation and everyday living costs.

Wherever you decide to learn English, you will be in good company. Many people from countries all around the world move to English speaking countries to learn. They love the experience and you will too.

Nowadays, people all around the world speak English as a first or second language. It’s hard to imagine a world without it, but there was a time when no one spoke English. Long ago, the people in Britain spoke the Celtic language. When three Germanic tribes successfully invaded Britain in the 5th century, they brought their own language with them. This was known as Englisc and it gave us the beginnings of the English language that we know today.

Languages develop and change over time and the oldest form of English seems foreign to the speakers of it today. The first type to be spoken is what we now call Old English, which was spoken in Britain from around 450 to 1100 AD. About half of the words we commonly use today came from Old English. The change from Old to Middle English occurred after William the Conqueror invaded England from Normandy, which we now know as part of France. The Norman conquerors spoke something like the French we know today and they brought this with them to England. French did not overtake English, as it was spoken by the upper classes. The lower classes continued to speak English, although many French words slipped in during this time. By the 14th century when it became the dominant language again, it included many French words and some of these are still part of the dialect we speak today. However, Middle English is not easy for today’s speakers to understand.

Early Modern English began with British people having contact with people from all around the world. This also meant that many new words came into the language. When the printing press was invented at this time, it led to a solidification of the language. With English now in print through books, pamphlets and papers, there was a standardised common language and fewer differences between the regions. The printing houses were based in London, so the dialect spoken and written in London became the standard for the rest of the English speaking people. Spelling and grammar were fixed and the first English dictionary was published in 1604.

The main distinction between Early Modern English and the English spoken today – known as Late Modern English – is vocabulary. We have many more words in our vocabulary than were commonly used before the 1800s. This is largely due to the Industrial Revolution, the introduction of more and more foreign words and new technology.

Today, many people from all around the world learn English as a second language.
